Paul,

You bring up an excellent point. I couldn't believe what had to happen to bend the hammer...and Will say he doesn't know. If that is true, what happens if the lock is misaligne and he didn't do anything? I have to admite that looking at it, the lock looked flush and the hammer is off by almost a full eighth to a quarter inch. It sure didn't look like this was the problem, but now you've got me thinking that I really want you and Ron to look at it prior to me doing anything.

Clay, I thought about this some more. It seems rather unlikely that the hammer got bent. These are hardened steel. I would think some other piece of the musket would give way first. I have seen several muskets exhibit a misaligned hammer/cone. In all cases it was due to an improperly mounted lockplate. Usually the lockplate over time has recessed into the stock when you tighten it causing the hammer to move to far inboard or the top/bottom of the lock recesses in further than the other causing the hammer to twist or be be pulled out or in. I have corrected several muskets (my brothers, the Pickler rifle, my '42) by making sure the lockplate is completely flush with the stock. I used shimms behind the plate as necessary to achieve this. Could this be your problem/solution?

Ron,

I looked at the hammer. It would appear to me it was dropped or something dropped on it, although Will doesn't know when or how it happened.

The action on the lock seems good with all springs in place and working. It holds a half cock position fine and the trigger seems to operate the action fine from a full cock position.

I have exactly the same concerns as you. I don't want try to bend back a hammer and tear up a Park Hale lock in the process.

The hammer only seems to be bent at the top misaligning in from the cone. My thought would be to put the whole thing in a vise, making sure that its blocked with steady hold at the bottom, so that when you twist on the hammer, you only apply torque to create a bending moment at the top, not the on the lock plate or stem holding the hammer. It will have to be delicate. Maybe if you are going to be at Highlands on Sunday, we bring the rifle, you and I can look at it, and Will can borrow my enfield for the day.

Thoughts?

just a couple of comments on the bent hammer. How do you bend a hammer on the lock? If the rifle was dropped, are you sure that it's not some other problem? Without seeing the rifle, my suggestion is to remove the hammer before trying to straighten it or you run the risk of dammaging the lock also. I have a small vise on a bench also if needed, but if you can get the hammer off, there may be other alternatives. Let me know if I can help. Ron

Clay,

I was thinking of letting you borrow it not trying to work with it at Highland. Either way. If you want to stop by some evening let me know.

Paul,

May want to work in a more controlled environment than Highland. We need to try to bend a hammer without messing up the entire lock.

May want to set up some time to swing by your place and see what we can do.

Clay,

I have a bench vise. It is not attached to anything at the moment. When I need it I use a couple of C clamps to hold it down. I can bring it to Highland or we can hook up before then if you need it sooner.

All,

Anybody happen to have a bench vise at the house? Will needs to straighten out the hammer on an enfield and we need something with a little bulk to it in order to hold the lock plate in place.

Any help is appreciated.
